Creative Writing Prompts: Two by Two

Today's photo is "Twins Together" by Marilyn Barbone.  Today's writing prompts have two steps, since we are focusing on "twos" today.

1.  Time yourself for 5 minutes and make a list of things in life that come in twos.  For example, here are a few things from my list:

Reese's peanut butter cups
warm mittens
socks
drumsticks

2.  a. Fiction Writing Prompt:  Start a story with something from your list in the opening line.
Example:  She was sure she hid the Reese's peanut butter cups in the best place ever, but when she went to retrieve them from the _________________________, they were gone.

b.  Creative Nonfiction Writing Prompt:  Pick one thing from your list that prompts a memory and write about it in relation to your life.
Example:  I'll never forget the soft gray mittens my grandmother made for me. . .

c.  Poetry Writing Prompt:  Write a 14 line poem about one of the subjects.

  1. I could only come up with eleven things that come in twos within the five minutes. Sure is a short period of time when you have a deadline.

    The Bookends

He was sure that the cast iron bust of Shakespeare bookends were around somewhere.

He had just bought them at a flea market a short time ago. They were bought to keep his "just in case" paperbacks lined up with their titles facing him.

When he needs something to read, and he does not have anything specific in mind, he will browse the titles until something piques his interest. He finds new authors a lot this way, and then goes to the library to get their other works if he really likes their style.

He looked everywhere he could think of, and still could find only one of them. At about five pounds a piece, it was unlikely it just got thrown out unnoticed.

He decided to rearrange his shelf so that one end butted right up against the wall, and the bookend kept them from falling off the other end.

After about a week, his wife sheepishly told him that she had taken the other one to work to hold up some manuals that were always falling over.

    Moral:

When you get something for a special purpose, make sure you use it for that purpose immediately.
